Chapter 30

Hiram continued to field phone calls from representatives around the world on the progress of his team’s findings. It was just past 0900 hours, yet his ear was warm and sore from the telephone receiver. His eyes were slow and tired, struggling to focus on the documents before him and the desire to sleep was becoming overwhelming. There was little good news to provide anyone he spoke to. Nya and Emerson continued to work feverishly at the previous data sets Jenson had collected but their results provided just one conclusion; they were consistent with their previous findings. SK01 was not the usual beast they had dealt with in previous emergencies. This was something of an entirely new entity and could not simply be put into an algorithm to track the potential spread and likely damages. It was looking more and more like the pathology Jenson had hypothesised. In a sense, this was good news, as they hoped to have the data to provide solutions and mitigation measures soon. What was providing Hiram with more trouble was how they would implement those measures. There was no global off switch to prevent civilians from accessing the conveniences of daily life. There was no way to ensure people were aligned with their circadian rhythms to assist sleep and neural regeneration. Ultimately, there was no way that a governing body such as the WHO, the UN or CINS could tell people how to live their lives.

The following day, Nya knocked softly on the door of Hiram’s office, her dark hair bouncing loosely over her shoulders. Her brown eyes cast a sympathetic look beneath her glasses as she approached his desk. He looked tired and dishevelled, almost defeated. It was clear that the infiltration of SK01 did not discriminate. Nya would have to move from the role of data analyst on the project to first-hand dealings with a patient. Hiram had succumbed. His usually focused and fierce narrow eyes pleaded with something, anything, for the static and pain in his mind to subside, but for some reason, there was no way to portray that to his protégé standing across the desk. He simply couldn’t find the words.

‘Hiram.’ Nya’s voice was gentle and soothing to his ears. ‘You and I both know what’s happening here.’

Tears welled in the corners of his eyes and the edge of his mouth tremored as he gave a gentle nod.

With the hospital services overwhelmed with SK01 patients, Nya thought there was little point in trying to admit him. Plus, they were possibly on the cusp of identifying that the disease was not communicable but rather a human response to the dramatic shift in way of life. It suddenly occurred to Nya that they had the perfect opportunity to carry out a case study and test the hypothesis that Jenson had suggested. Hiram now had the potential to provide pragmatic, anecdotal evidence to back the claims. It might just be the missing link in the equation of convincing other nations of the proposal.
